Mike Longyear ~ PGA Professional

Mike will become the 15th Golf Professional in South Bend Country Club’s storied 104 year history.   Mike is originally from Bellevue, Ohio where he attended Bellevue High School and later Eastern Michigan University majoring in education.   Mike became a PGA member in June of 2000.

Before coming to SBCC, Mike served as the Head PGA Golf Professional/Director of Instruction at the Lost Dunes Golf Club from 2010-2019.  Prior to Lost Dunes Golf Club Mike worked for Troon Golf at the El Macero Country Club in Davis, California (2008-2010) where he helped lead them to Troon’s “Most improved facility” award in 2008.  While at El Macero Country Club he served as the Assistant coach to the nationally ranked #12 Women’s University of California Davis golf team.  His start with Troon golf came in 2007 as the PGA Tournament Director at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California (host site of the PGA Tour Bob Hope Chrysler Classic).  Mike also served as the PGA Head Golf Professional at Lake Michigan Hills from 2002-2007 and as the PGA Head Golf Professional/Assistant Golf Professional at Pine View Golf Club from 1995-2001.

Mike’s first career choice out of college was teaching and coaching.  He coached boys golf and varsity basketball at Ann Arbor Greenhills prep school from (1997-2001) where he helped lead the Gryphons to five consecutive state golf appearances including back to back state championship runner up finishes.

Mike has a few unique accomplishments as a player in the game of golf #1- Winning the Mens club Championship at Twin Lakes Golf Club at age 13, just 3 years after picking up the game.  #2-As a four year High School Varsity player he had back to back Eagles in an OHSAA state record performance.  #3-  Once Birdied the last 7 holes to finish his round at the Oak Pointe Honors course and #4-has been listed as one of Titleist top 100 golf professionals.

Mike married his wife Renee in 1999 whom he met at Eastern Michigan University, They have one son Davis who is a freshman on the Siena Heights University Men’s Golf team in Adrian, Michigan.   When not at the golf course you can find Mike rooting on his beloved Cleveland sports teams (Browns, Indians, and Cavs) or enjoying a round of golf with Renee and or Davis.

Logan Steffes ~ Assistant Golf Professional

Logan will be working as an Assistant Pro to Mike Longyear at South Bend Country Club. Logan is from Stevensville, Michigan where he attended Lakeshore High School. Logan just recently graduated from the University of Michigan in May of 2020 with a degree in Sport Management.

Before coming to SBCC, Logan worked at Lost Dunes Golf Club as a caddy from 2017 to 2019. During the summer of 2019, he also worked as an intern in the golf operations department at Lost Dunes under supervisor, Pete Han. Prior to Lost Dunes Golf Club, Logan worked at Point O’ Woods Country Club (2011-2017) as an honor caddy where he received the Evan’s Scholarship to attend the University of Michigan. In his four years at the University of Michigan, Logan held a number of different positions within the Evan’s Scholar House along with receiving awards from the Western Golf Association for his academic accomplishments. While in college Logan also competed on both the Michigan Club Golf and Club Basketball teams.

Logan’s playing career started in junior golf, where he competed on both the Meijer Junior Tour and Adams Junior Tour before qualifying to play in a number of events associated with the American Junior Golf Association. In high school, Logan played for four years on the varsity golf team. In his junior year season, Logan qualified for the MHSAA Division 2 State Golf Championship individually where he finished 13th overall. In his final year at Lakeshore Logan broke a school record for the lowest scoring average recorded in a season.

Logan was raised by his parents, Jason and Stacey, and is the oldest sibling of four children. When he is not on the golf course, Logan can be found in the gym playing basketball or on the mountains skiing during the winter seasons.

Ashley Hughes ~ Assistant Clubhouse Manager

Ashley is a South Bend Native. She recently graduated from Indiana University South Bend with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics. She served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 8 years as a Vehicle Mechanic and Chemical Specialist. She served on a humanitarian mission to Nicaragua in 2016 building bathroom facilities and water filtration systems.

Ashley has over 13 years of experience in the service industry with 3 of those years here at South Bend Country Club. She started here as a bartender and worked her way up to where she is now. When Ashley is not at the club, she enjoys playing the drums, listening to music, and enjoying any sport. Also, she loves spending time with her dog and 3 cats.

Brad Thornburg ~ Executive Chef

Brad is from Southwest Michigan, graduated from Watervliet High School. He has worked in the culinary industry for 20+ years. He was the Sous Chef at Tosis Restaurant, and Lost Dunes Golf Club. he has also been the Head Chef of Harbor Shores, Lake Michigan Hills, and most recently Chef de Cuisine at Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant.

When Brad is not in the kitchen he enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his daughter. He also has 2 English Mastiffs that keep him busy.
